Opera IS bad. At some point in the history of man a snobby (and evil) Italian man invented an insidious joke....hijinks ensue adding large women with horns....the joke continues on, at some point mating with real theater to produce their bastard spawn; musicals.

Second, Music redeems itself. 5/11/2008

My sister had me come along with her to Lawrence to see a show at the Granada. She was going to see Josh Ritter and the opening act was a girl named Dawn Landes.
Landes was good. Kinda folk and alternative, which maybe just be the new folk. iTunes says rock. Her showmanship needs a little work. One song, whose first line is 'we are kids in a play, she introduced with 'this song is about kids in a play'. I just don't think it needs the set up she thinks it does. I found out later the name of that particular song was indeed, Kids in a Play. I would see her again if she comes around though.
Josh Ritter was very entertaining. Even iTune more trouble than usual classifying him, Rock Folk, Alternative, you could throw blues in there if you wanted. It was all very good, very skillful. I was surprised, considering I've only heard about two of his songs before. I would definitely recommend a listen.

Conclusion: Opera, don't let the door hit you on the way out.

My question is this: Why is it in five minutes, five people can display more skill in story telling, music and emotion than opera can in three hours?

Yes, a new post

get over it.

I've categorized the people I help everyday into three categories; applicants candidates, and employees. In my head they are in a never ending struggle to annoy and surprise me with their lack of common sense and abysmal reading comprehension. Here are three examples, one from each category, help me decide which is worse.

Applicant: Today a girl came in asking about positions as a CNA, I told her everything was online and she could use our terminals or do it from home. she seemed to want to do it from home so I gave her the card that has Jobline one it and has the job line number and website one it. she then proceeded to ask if she should call this "Joe Bleen" when she was done with her application. she did catch herself after a few seconds and was good enough to let me laugh at her.

Candidate: Today I get a call from the company that does our drug screens they have a candidate (candidates being the people we plan on hiring) that had scheduled a physical with them, which we don't have them do there, so we had her do the drug test. she called about a half hour later and told me out occupational clinic did not have her on file to do a physical..... It's because we have officially offered her a job yet (yet another reason I really worry about nurses). she'll probably be put in candidate purgatory for a week or so .

Employee: I got a message the other day from an employee he was curious about prescription coverage, that in itself isn't dumb, he should be asking blue cross this but insurance is confusing. here's the dumb part, he rattled off the drug and why he was taking it. It wasn't for herpes or anything but why would anyone leave that in a message for the front desk.

What about R.O.U.S.'s

Thats rats of unusual size for those of you who don't remember The Princess Bride. I'm expecting some, well symbolically. I've skipped ahead a bit. I'm buying a new computer soon and It's been a huge headache. First I find a decent computer then find that it might be horribly underpowered for a graphics card. Next, I find that power supply specifications are secrets guarded closely by computer gnomes or some such nonsense. But after three days, two headaches, and one pot of coffee later I see light at the end of the tunnel. I do however remain confident that tomorrow a giant rat will attack and rape my dreams of a good computer, again symbolically. A special thanks to Donald who has helped me out through this.

surprisingly good

I rented Lady in the Water this weekend. Sitting in the meeting today where the benefits of applying online were sounded, we didn't discussed the downside. We talked about how much easier the online application was, we didn't discuss the fact that probably half the people that apply have to call in because the digital signature is confusing. We talked about the about how most people are internet savvy enough to get through our application, we didn't didn't talk about the fact that the aforementioned well rounded, reasonable people aren't the sort that apply/work at KUmed. we talked about how easy we've made for people to sign up for an email address, we didn't talk about the 30 other things I have to do other than help someone signup email. we talked about certain recruiters getting more paper applications than others, we failed to mention the fact that those recruiters don't put their positions online, and we advertise positions in the paper that don't exist yet. all-in-all the point of the meeting was if we shout and close our eyes everything will work out fine. at thats why my department is a giant cluster

thats a bad TV, BAD

Are any of you familar with the move "Cube"? it was one of those Sci-fi original movies that no one should watch but inevitably we've all seen one that we remember. After she left, I realized that she had rearranged a couple of drawers, on which normally contained new-hire parking things and envelopes, she had taken all the the envelopes and thrown them in the big drawer at the bottem out of my reach. The envelopes and parking stuff have lived happily in that drawer since I started, so I moved the envelopes right back. when she came back I proceeded to tell her that I need those within arms reach and they are fine where they were at, and please inform me next time she moves my stuff around so I know where it is, she left in a huff. I got an email from my boss who got half the story, when I explained that I had to search for my stuff and there was no need for parking to have it's very own drawer she sided with me, which is surprising since a well reasoned arguement isn't typically recieved well in human resources.

Concept vs Implementation

So we have an HR generalist who has taken it upon herself to streamline procedure around the office, by streamline I mean create more work for me, It's a good concept but the implementation isn't going well for me. you see she doesn't understand the difference between what she wants the recruiters to do, color coating and what not, and what they really do. This will mean that I can be sent home for a couple weeks without pay since I am still working with a staffing agency and there is no support mechanism in place for people in my predicament. I've been assured that my testing will be free but fat lot of good it does me should I seek treatment or want to pay for things like food and rent. I don't even have to catch it to get sent home, just be officially exposed. for those of you I've seen recently, you are in no danger since my exposure happened late last week and It's not until around 10 days that you can become contagious, and I won't be seeing you until this thing is cleared up. It was an awesome show, with a few exceptions that had little to do with the performers.

First, who ever was lighting the show decided to use the projectors for evil rather than good. The theme, which I can only imagine the designer thought was "A Journey Through the Seasons with Nickel Creek" Included many weather related effects that were distracting at best. There were also two bar skanks rocking out. Also, judging by what the waitresses were wearing Harrahs is running some sort of prostitute rehab program.

High points include an absolutely hilarious rendition of Britney Spears' Toxic, to which even the dancing bar skanks could only look on in awe at the only song that their dancing would be appropriate for. For an encore the lead singer played, amazingly, a Bach concerto on the mandolin. The opening act was Ben Lee from Australia who turned out to be a good act, although I think I was sitting next to a guy who was there more to see Ben rather than Nickel Creek.

What Bothers Me?

It's not that Bush's approval rating is so low, What bothers me is it's so high. there are actually so many americans with their fingers in their ears singing "la la la I can't hear you". everyone balks at those stats about high schoolers not knowing where Iowa is, But there is a good percentage of adult Americans that actually still Iraq had WMDs. The Bitch Barn we all know got a new roof after we moved out but it's now been painted and it has new gravel in the driveway, other people stolen deposits at work i suppose. Also a bunch of the houses accross the street were torn down and those apartments by the train tracks have expanded down the street. The Price Chopper/Piggley Wiggly/IGA is now on it's fourth name that i know of, It is called Parkers. Bumblefuck Manor is occupied but looks as non-descript from the outside as it did when we lived there, I think it has a new roof. There are now information signs at certain intersections telling you how to get to downtown, the "medical district" and other places of note, as far as I can tell the left wal-mart off the signs but it felt like it should have been on there. Video palace (the video place across 13) from the library is now a tannery, and has a gas skirt around the roof. Taco Bell, not to be outclassed by Mcdonalds, got a make over. But inspite of these changes Warrensburg looks and seems exactly the same.

Contrary to popular belief

1.I am still alive
2. I like the job well enough but still it doesn't hurt to keep looking so I saw an ad for a hiring coordinator at Trugreen (my old job), It had many of the HR duties I did at RGIS so I sent my resume in, they called me back in two hours and I had already found out that I wasn't working at shor-line the next day because of system problems so I went in Wednesday morning and interviewed.

Wednesday: I found out I was being laid off temporarily from shor-line since the system troubles were a bit more permanent so they decided to upgrade to a new inventory system, and wouldn't need us for a few weeks, wankers. So I was a little bit happier to go into Trugreen, we talked for about five minutes and he told me while he couldn't blow off the other five interviews I pretty much had the job and to call him back around six, and I did. Pat, my new boss asked me if I wanted to start Thursday and I said sure, in the background I heard him say "I'm gonna fire her", now these are salespeople so they are loud and boisterous and I just thought he was pissed at someone but he turns out to be talking about my predecessor

Thursday: I go in and most people don't even realize that I'm not there to assist Brooke, so much as I'm replacing her, It was kinda fun. I am now Mike Jones, Branch Employment Coordinator, it sounds more impressive than it seems to be.

Night at westport

So I saw my first Russian Film the other night, since it was my first i can't really make a comment about russian films, it was good though, sort of like underworld only with a story and a plot but less special effects. The effect were fairly good, just not the point of the movie which is more than I can say for most american action films. what was most interesting to me was the subtitles, they actually did alot with them, maybe russian films depend on the european market. there were shifts in color some were blurry, at a couple points something would move on the screen (like an arm or a door) to reveal the next line, I've never seen this before. Although the subtitles did not make or break the movie they were different.

Also i got to see chrissy, sam, nick and kelly which is always fun but rare.

Watch this space

So heres some good music that people have either told me about or I found .

Mint Royale: Nice fun, whimsical even, dance stuff check out the song "space farm". Robyn and her friend went to ladies night at a bar, when it finally comes out the slimy is still hitting on the friend. In true form they lay a trap for slimy where the friend is the bait. Slimey drive 40 miles and shows up to see robyn and her friend there waiting, now you can't catch and amorphous blob in a bear trap and slimy proceded to blame Robyn's friend for any problems that he and Robyn would ever have, while not turning the tables enough to get into anyones pants that night he suceeded in making Robyn feel bad and now she's in her room chatting with him right now. I do hate do keep writing about this but when it ends in a rip-roaring orgy of tears, and it will, I don't want to have to catch you guys up on the backstory. The forecast; Partly stupid with a chance of STD.

Something wicked this way comes

Alternate title: Poison gas, friend or foe?

Don't you love when some drunken misunderstandings that are later forgiven point to deeper flaws. Ok, so last night Robyn (roommate) comes home from playing pool with her friend and this guy, and drama ensues, I'm not telling this story again. At anyrate her friend gets mad, guy is kinda slimy, and robyn ends up pissed, Robyn leaves with guy comes back at five in the morning they spend the morning in bed, her friend is calling me trying to figure out if robyn will ever talk to her again. it's now been twenty-four hours and they've all reconciled But theres some bigger misunderstanding that they are rolling right over. I'd like to think that this isn't going to be a thing I get dragged into later but thats just not in the cards. I'm just pissed that they are all warm and fuzzy and I feel like a storm is coming. And you wonder why I look forward to hanging out with sane friends on the weekend.

In defense of responsible hunters everywhere

Ok so the vice president has shot a man in a hunting accident. heres a quote "The vice president didn't see him," she continued. First, to kick off our two week layoff at work I went hunting with my dad, it was cold, and i got nothing. second, I had went home the night before to spend the night because we were leaving early on monday morning. third, my mom was sick and kinda out of it. Fourth, I left my phone at home in my jeans pocket. Fifth, my mom was doing a load of laundry and stuck my jeans in there to finish off the load. this is where three and five really come into play, being out of it, my mom didn't really check the pockets of my jeans before putting them in the wash, which when she did my laundry regulary she always did, so i attribute this to her flu. I came home to exceptionally clean and broken phone. A new one will arrive wednesday or thursday, so bless cingular for including two day delivery for insured phones.

The holiday scowl

Today i was unwillingly drug into the holiday driving shuffle, I just wanted to see a movie. The movie theater is across the street from a mall and has shops of it's own so extra trafficcy deliciousness. I was in a right lane where most everyone turns in to the kohls parking lot, when a guy trying to get on the street going the other way realized I wasn't turning and he needed to stop. I had to dodge him a bit, and it wasn't neccesarily his fault ( he couldn't see that I didn't have my blinker on, not that most people use them) but then i saw it, the holiday scowl, that look you get when you've just left a store after finding nothing suitable, and knowing that it will take you twenty minutes to get across the street with only marginal hopes of finding a gift. First you have to go to a building to pay to get your stolen goods back, before you pay the only information you get is whether or not they determine as drivable or not drivable, and whatever damage they think your car may have incurred (two windows out and a broken steering column in my case), so I paid my 75 bucks since it was "drivable" next you venture to the lot and wait to have an attendant escort you to the vehicle. The lot is football field sized graveyard, I think they put the worst cars up front to scare you. Only one person is allowed in so I sent my dad since he is more mechanically inclined, so like a contestant on bizarro "who wants to be a millionaire" I used my lifeline. It is after he comes back without the car we find out that whoever determined the car drivable doesn't know that cars need batteries. So we go to a store, get a battery, and wait in line some more, apparently that was all the damage they did to the engine, so we were on our way. At some point during the drive I decided to see what would happen if you rolled a broken window up, not surprising that nothing happens, although a miracle occurred one of the windows repaired itself and rolled up, well either a miracle or further proof that the person in charge of determining damage might indeed be a hamster. At any rate my car is back and will be fixed soon enough.

My car is found

So the police found my car, i haven't seen it yet but they said there are just two windows out and the steering column is busted, that means i didn't leave my keys in my car to all the idiots who ask if i left them in there. so i journey now to go see martha and bring her back home.

Solution for writers block

found something to write about. I went out on the deck to have a cigarette (shut it Spare). There was a snake swimming past in the pond that my apartment complex has, and in that fog of focus you get in the morning where you really only see the thing you looking at and nothing in the periphery it looked huge like one of those blurry pictures of Loch Ness. As I paid it a little more attention I realized it was only about three feet long and there was a duck giving it a wide berth, but that was about it. Something you'd only think about early in the morning when you aren't quite awake.

Chapel shopping

So I went with Robyn yesterday to Powell Gardens to see the chapel.
